Nightguards & Occlusal Splints

Protect your teeth from the effects of grinding and clenching with a custom-fitted nightguard or occlusal splint, made precisely to your bite at Serene Family Dental.

Stop Grinding from Wearing Down Your Smile

Teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw clenching are among the most common — and most overlooked — causes of dental damage. Many people grind in their sleep without realising it, only noticing the effects over time: worn, flat, or chipped teeth, morning jaw soreness, headaches, and heightened tooth sensitivity. A custom nightguard is the most effective way to protect your teeth from this nightly wear.

At Serene Family Dental, we take precise impressions of your teeth and have your nightguard fabricated by a dental laboratory to fit your bite exactly. A correctly fitted appliance is far more comfortable and effective than over-the-counter options, which can cause jaw discomfort and do not account for your specific bite.

For patients who also experience jaw joint pain (TMJ disorder), we may recommend an occlusal splint — a more precisely engineered appliance that repositions the jaw slightly to reduce muscle tension and protect the jaw joint, in addition to shielding the teeth. Occlusal splints are also used to protect crowns, veneers, and implants in patients who grind.

Treatment typically involves two appointments: an impression appointment to capture your bite, and a fitting appointment a week or two later once the appliance is ready. We adjust the fit at the chair and provide guidance on care and maintenance. Patients from Penrith, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, St Marys, and across Western Sydney are welcome.

Custom-Made for Your Bite, Not Off-the-Shelf

Laboratory-Fabricated Precision

Every nightguard and splint is made by a dental laboratory from impressions of your own teeth, ensuring a comfortable, accurate fit that protects your bite without causing strain.

Comfortable to Wear

We balance protection with comfort. An appliance you actually want to wear is one that does its job. We adjust the fit at the fitting appointment and follow up if needed.

Protects Existing Restorations

Crowns, veneers, implants, and fillings represent a significant investment. A nightguard is the most cost-effective way to protect that investment from the forces of grinding.

Ongoing Monitoring

We check your appliance at every recall appointment to assess wear and ensure it is still fitting correctly. We can reline or replace it when needed.

Nightguard & Splint FAQs

A nightguard is a protective appliance worn during sleep to prevent tooth-to-tooth contact during grinding. An occlusal splint is designed to also reposition the jaw to reduce muscle tension and strain on the jaw joint (TMJ). Both are custom-made from impressions of your teeth for an accurate, comfortable fit.
Common signs include waking with jaw soreness or headaches, visible wear or flattening of the teeth, tooth sensitivity, cracked teeth, and a partner reporting grinding sounds at night. Your dentist can often identify signs of bruxism during a routine check-up before you are even aware of it. If you suspect you grind, book an assessment.
A well-maintained custom nightguard typically lasts 3 to 5 years, though heavy grinders may wear through one faster. We check the condition and fit of your appliance at each recall appointment and can replace it when needed. Proper cleaning and storage in its case extends the lifespan considerably.
Custom occlusal splints and nightguards are claimable under most Extras health insurance policies. The rebate depends on your level of cover. We process all major health fund claims on the spot via HICAPS and can provide a quote before treatment begins so you know your out-of-pocket cost.
Over-the-counter guards are thick and bulky, and because they do not fit your bite accurately, they can cause jaw strain and even worsen clenching. A custom-made appliance is significantly more comfortable, thinner, and provides proper protection. For moderate to heavy grinders, a custom guard is the recommended approach.
