Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Catching jaw and bite problems early in childhood — while the jaw is still growing — can prevent more complex and costly treatment later. We assess and guide your child's dental development from the start.

The Right Time to Act Is While Your Child Is Still Growing

Early interceptive orthodontics — also called Phase 1 orthodontics or interceptive treatment — involves identifying and addressing developing bite or jaw problems in children, typically between the ages of 6 and 10, while growth is actively occurring. Intervening at this stage can guide jaw development, create space for permanent teeth, and correct problems that would become far more difficult to treat once the jaw has finished growing.

Not every child needs early orthodontic treatment. Many children are best served by monitoring and waiting for the right time to begin comprehensive orthodontics in early adolescence. However, certain problems respond much better to early intervention — and missing the window can mean more invasive treatment later, including possible jaw surgery in severe cases.

Common issues addressed through early intervention include crossbites (where upper teeth bite inside lower teeth), underbites (lower jaw sitting too far forward), severe crowding requiring arch expansion, thumb or finger sucking habits affecting tooth and jaw position, and early or late loss of baby teeth that may compromise space for permanent teeth. Appliances used may include expanders, removable plates, or limited braces on specific teeth.

Our dentists assess your child's jaw development, bite, and tooth eruption at every check-up. If we identify a concern that may benefit from early treatment, we will discuss it with you clearly and explain your options. We welcome patients from Penrith, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Jordan Springs, and across Western Sydney.

Acting Early Means Less Treatment Later

Growth Is Your Ally

During childhood, the jaw bones are soft and responsive to guidance. Appliances that harness natural growth can achieve results in months that would take years — or would require surgery — in adulthood.

Honest Recommendations

We only recommend early treatment when there is a genuine benefit. Many children are monitored and reviewed until the right time for comprehensive treatment. We will always explain why treatment is or is not indicated.

Child-Friendly Environment

We make every effort to ensure children feel comfortable and at ease. A positive early experience with orthodontic care sets the tone for a lifetime of good dental habits.

Convenient Extended Hours

School day appointments can be hard to fit in. We offer evening appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Saturday appointments to work around your family's schedule.

Early Orthodontics FAQs

Most orthodontic associations recommend an initial orthodontic assessment around age 7, when the first permanent molars and incisors have erupted. This allows the dentist to identify any developing issues with bite, jaw width, or tooth spacing early — while there is still the most opportunity to guide growth. At Serene Family Dental, we assess jaw development at every check-up and will flag any concerns proactively.
Early intervention can address crossbites, underbites, narrow jaw arches, severe crowding, thumb-sucking habits affecting tooth position, early or late loss of baby teeth, and certain speech issues related to jaw and tooth development. Not every child needs early treatment — the assessment helps identify who will benefit most from acting now rather than waiting.
Early treatment simplifies but does not always eliminate the need for later comprehensive orthodontics. It can significantly reduce treatment time, complexity, and cost at the teenage stage. Some children treated early will need only minor or no further orthodontic work; others may still benefit from braces or aligners, but with a much better starting point.
Orthodontic treatment including appliances used in early interception is covered under most Extras policies with an orthodontic benefit. Lifetime limits apply. We provide a detailed quote before treatment begins and process claims via HICAPS on the spot so you can claim your benefit immediately.
It is never too late for an assessment. Children between 8 and 11 are often in the ideal window for early interceptive treatment. Even if some growth has already occurred, there is frequently still meaningful opportunity to guide development. Book an assessment and we will advise on the options most appropriate for your child's age and stage.
