Most people have heard the advice: "see your dentist every six months." But is that actually right for everyone? The truth is more nuanced - and understanding the right schedule for your situation can save you from painful (and expensive) problems down the track.
The Standard: Every Six Months
For most healthy adults with good oral hygiene habits, a check-up and clean every six months is the gold standard recommended by the Australian Dental Association (ADA). At each visit your dentist will:
- Remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing can't reach
- Check for early signs of decay, gum disease, and oral cancer
- Take periodic X-rays to detect problems hidden between teeth or under the gum line
- Review your oral hygiene technique and recommend any changes
Catching problems early - when a tiny cavity can be fixed with a small filling - is dramatically cheaper and less invasive than treating advanced decay that requires a root canal or crown.
When You Might Need More Frequent Visits
Some patients benefit from seeing the dentist every three to four months rather than every six. Your dentist may recommend this if you have:
Active gum disease (periodontitis) - Gum disease progresses faster in some patients and needs regular professional cleaning to prevent bone loss around teeth.
A history of frequent cavities - If you're prone to decay, more frequent monitoring helps catch new cavities before they deepen.
Diabetes - Diabetes and gum disease have a two-way relationship: each makes the other worse. Diabetic patients benefit from more frequent dental care to keep the cycle in check.
A dry mouth (xerostomia) - Saliva is your mouth's natural defence against decay. Patients on certain medications or undergoing cancer treatment often experience dry mouth and need closer monitoring.
Pregnancy - Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase gum inflammation and the risk of gum disease. More frequent cleans help keep things under control.
Smokers - Tobacco use significantly increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer. More frequent visits - and thorough checks for early signs of oral cancer - are strongly recommended.
Can You Visit Less Often?
Some patients ask whether they can stretch to once a year - and for a small number of low-risk individuals with excellent home hygiene, this may be appropriate. However, this should only be decided by your dentist after assessing your specific risk profile. Going by yourself without guidance risks missing early problems that develop silently.
What About Children?
For children, the ADA recommends first dental visits by age one or within six months of the first tooth appearing. From there, six-monthly visits through childhood and adolescence help:
- Monitor jaw and tooth development
- Apply fissure sealants to protect back teeth from decay
- Identify and address orthodontic issues early (crowding, bite problems)
- Build positive associations with dental visits before anxiety develops
Children enrolled in the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) may be eligible for up to $1,095 in bulk-billed dental care over two years - a great opportunity to establish regular habits at no cost to families.
The Real Cost of Skipping Check-Ups
People often delay dental visits to save money - but it almost always costs more in the long run. Consider:
| Problem caught at 6-month check-up | Estimated cost (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Small cavity - simple filling | $180–$280 |
| Large cavity left untreated for 2 years | Root canal + crown: $2,000–$3,500 |
| Early gum disease caught and managed | Scale and clean: $200–$350 |
| Advanced periodontitis requiring surgery | $3,000–$6,000+ |
Regular check-ups are genuinely one of the most cost-effective things you can do for your health.
